Creating Image Alt Text

Images

Images must include descriptive alt text

  • Alt text should be short, clear and convey the purpose or impact of the image.
  • Alt text should be no more than 125 characters.
  • Alt text should contain appropriate punctuation, including a period at the end of the text.
  • You should not include “Photo of” or “Image of” in your alt text.

Bad:
❌ Students and mascot

Good:
Fr. Kelly and Tommy Titan surrounded by smiling members of the 麻豆传媒社区 Pep Band.

Images and Accessibility

  • Avoid text in images. Screen readers can’t read it. Flyers, posters, or other print-style graphics should not be posted on websites.

  • Infographics are okay, but include detailed alt text and also provide the same information in regular text on the page.

  • Decorative vs. Informational images:

    • Decorative = only for visual appeal (like headers or backgrounds).

    • Informational = adds important content (like a faculty photo).

  • The same image can be decorative or informational, depending on how it’s used.

The same image could be decorative or informational – !
